Words of Remembrance

"End? No, the journey doesn't end here. Death is just another path, one that we all must take. The grey rain-curtain of this world rolls back, and all turns to silver glass, and then you see it... White shores, and beyond, a far green country under a swift sunrise."

— J.R.R. Tolkien

George “Ed” Edwin Herring, 75, passed away peacefully in January 2026. He was a good hearted man of strong character...

Born to George Willard and Genevieve Herring, Ed was a man who never met a stranger. Known for his incredibly friendly and outgoing nature, he navigated life with a spirit that drew people to him. To put it simply: Ed loved everyone, and he was loved in return.

Ed served his country with pride in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War, working as a mechanic aboard the aircraft carrier USS Coral Sea. His technical skills and adventurous spirit followed him into his civilian career as a Logistics Manager for Lockheed Martin. He contributed to history working on the Apollo program and later played a key role in setting up the launch site on Kodiak Island, Alaska.

Outside of work, Ed was rarely still. He was a true outdoorsman who loved the thrill of both snow and water skiing, road biking, and fishing. When he wasn’t active outdoors, he could be found lost in the pages of a Lord of the Rings novel or a Clive Cussler adventure. He also brought joy to those around him through his love of karaoke, never afraid to take the mic and entertain a crowd (and punish their eardrums).

Above all, Ed cherished his family. He was a devoted father and grandfather, and enjoyed being around kids so much the neighbor kids would knock on the door to ask him to play. He cared deeply about his extended family as well and would travel across the country to visit them any chance he got.

Ed is survived by his son, Kris; his former wife, Carol; and his beloved grandchildren, Sommer, Emilynn, and Jonathan. He is reunited in death with his parents, George and Genevieve, and his brothers, Gary and David.
